The star of the "Ford v. Ferrari" movie, this legendary race car was originally called the "Ford GT'" by Ford Motor Company, however once the motoring press learned that it sat just 40-inches tall, it quickly was referred to as "GT40" and the name stuck.
When Carroll Shelby was pulled in to contribute to the project, the single goal was to beat Ferrari on the world stage. The refined Ford GT Mark II shocked the motorsports world on June 19th, 1966 as that was the date when the Ford GT40 crossed the LeMans finish line in 1-2-3 formation, making it clear that Henry Ford II's "Total Performance" campaign lived up to its name.
Here's how Carroll Shelby had summed up his involvement in the Ford GT: "Shucks, I'm not an engineer. I'm not even very smart. The only thing I understand is human nature. I just like to bring the right people together and see what happens. I think I've put together the right people at Shelby American."
