For most folks, the love of American cars starts behind the wheel.
Here I am, feeling good behind the wheel of my dad’s vintage Studebaker, dreaming of the day that I would be driving.
Every family summer vacation was a road trip, watching the world unfold mile after mile, windows cranked for the warm breeze, sometimes too hot, but we handled it.
Cars and motoring have been in my blood ever since.
I began driving sitting in my dad’s lap. In his Studebaker station wagon I would be steering the wheel and shifting gears all on a Sunday afternoon in the empty parking lot. Always good to start early!
My solo behind-the-wheel was in a 1966 Dodge Cornet. I took my driver's test in this car. At one point, my dad let me put Baby Moons on and it was like having my own car.
During my last year of high school, I cruised around in a Ford Falcon convertible. It was the 6 not the V8. Ahhhh…the summer of ’69!
In college, I had a 1959 Ford Ranchero. I didn’t need a pickup, just liked the looks.
In the garage today, is my restored '52 Studebaker 2R5 pickup. I’ ve had a good times driving up and down the country dirt roads. Also, I taught my kids to drive this truck with the three-on-the-tree and O.D.
The Crew at USA CarWorld has access to a library of car stories. We want to pass these along for the enjoyment of car enthusiasts of all ages.
As always, eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, and keep driving!
